Quiz for Canadian politican junkies

Who first discovered the problems with the sponsorship program?

1) The Media
2) The Auditor General Sheila Fraser
3) The Opposition
4) The Liberal Government

And the answer is….drum roll please…Don Boudria Liberal cabinet minister for Public Works!

The government was expecting a report from Group Action worth $550
000.  It seemed that the study was lost.  Eventually they did
find it.  It was almost exactly like another very expensive report
right down to the spelling mistakes.

Don Boudria called for an audit.  Sheila Fraser did her thing and that was the beginning of the sponsorship scandal.

You can read all about it here.

I suspect you’re trying to say the Liberals deserve some credit for looking into the scandal.

I agree, although one could argue they had no alternative (rumors had been floating around for years), and it still doesn’t ultimately answer who knew what and when. I suspect we’ll learn a lot more of that when the final report is released from the Gomery Comission.

Hooray for the Liberals! Now, let’s re-elect them, and we can all go back to our lives.

Ok, the Liberals spent half a million dollars for a report. They don’t get the report. They forget about it for 3 years. The new guy shows up and asks for the report. Bingo! A huge scandal is discovered. I don’t see how any Liberal should get credit. One Liberal went looking for a report which accidentally lead to scandal and corruption being uncovered. Maybe the Liberals should be roasted for not looking for the report 3 years earlier. Too bad they couldn’t have accidentally discovered the scandal 10 years ago when they started this mess.

My post here proves one point, there are honest Liberals. They did not get caught by any outside agency.

I accept that there are honest Liberals. The majority are.

However, the reason this scandal was not uncovered by any outside agency is because it was hidden and organized so that no outside agency could uncover it. Only Liberals were aware of it for almost a decade. There were no safeguards and, for seven years, no one bothered to see how the money was spent or if it was doing any good. They could have prevented it. That’s why I can not give credit to the Liberals for revealing their own mess. Mr. Boudria had no idea what was about to be uncovered. If however, a member of the Liberal party came forward and said, “There is a huge problem here which seems to be funneling money to our supporters for no other reason than they contributed to our campaign and thus, we are getting some of the government’s money back in our pockets,” I would be inclined to give the Liberal party, or at least that member more credit.
