Together we can make it better

Change begins when

we believe

In a brighter day

A better way to succeed

Together we can make it better

You & Me

So we can be

Safe

Prosperous

and Free

This is a really great ad. Up until now I’ve been largely unimpressed by the hype around Obama. Right now he looks like a shining beacon in comparison to McCain.  I never though McCain would drop to the lows he has.

I still don’t think Obama has the right plan for America.  I think America needs a president who will actually cut spending. I don’t know if America has ever had one. All the recent republicans increased spending slowly adding to the burden on future generations.

I was talking with a friend last night about Saskatchewan.  The province of Saskatchewan almost went bankrupt in 1991.  The “conservative” government had run up such terrible deficits that our bonds were about to be rated as “junk”.  We elected a new government that raised our sales tax to 9%, closed dozens of hospitals and cancelled programs.  We had one of the highest income tax rates in Canada.  Our “socialist” government wasn’t tax and spend, it was tax and cut.

It was rough.  In those days I remember how excited I was to find a full time minimum wage job because it was really difficult for a teenager to get that much work.  It didn’t take long and we balanced the budget.  Each year as things got better the taxes eased up  and the spending began again.  In the mid-nineties Canada’s federal government started fixing their own fiscal house which offloaded a lot of those spending cuts to the provinces.  Our health care system has yet to fully recover.  For the most part those difficult days are behind us.

We had to do it.  Now America has to do the same thing.  America needs to cut spending and raise taxes.  They need to start paying their bills.  If they try to grow their way out of their debt problem the debt will consume them.
